No matter the type of motor, there are three basic parts: a stator, a commutator, and a rotor. Together they use electromagnetism to cause the motor to spin. Electricity running through a wire makes a magnetic field. Taking the wire and coiling it around a rod with electricity generates a magnetic field. The magnetic field around the rod has two poles: north and south.
With basic magnetism like poles repel each other. Therefore, opposite poles attract each other. By surrounding the rod with numerous magnets, the rod starts to spin. What causes the spinning? The rod moving between repulsive and attractive forces at the poles.
The Stator and the Rotor
The electric motor stator stays stationary during the rotation. Usually, the stator has a row of magnets. These magnets have a casing that often looks like a drum. The rotor is inserted in the stator. Usually, the rotor consists of copper wire in a coil. The coil is around the spinning axle.
At the end of the coil is a metal ring called the commutator. This piece reverses the current between the rotor and the battery. This keeps the axle spinning in a single direction. By reversing the magnet’s polarity, the rotor continues spinning through repulsion and attraction.
Additionally, the brushes can be made of graphite. Their role is to send an electric current to the motor’s commutator. The terminals send current to spin the rotor. They are typically located where the motor and battery attached.
